Another Fan

I got the Lasko 52" Oscillating Pedestal Fan that I had talked about earlier. I was on Amazon.com yesterday, when I discovered that something I had been waiting weeks to hear about was on its way by UPS. And, UPS tracking showed that it would arrive today. Plus I had a Physical Therapy appointment. So, after some thought, I decided to pull the trigger on it.

I paid an extra $3.99 for the 1 day delivery upgrade from Amazon Prime, to make it arrive today.

Nothing really much to say about the fan, except that it looks like it will definitely work much better, than the 42" one, next to my bed. So far it hasn't been uncomfortable enough to resort to using an additional fan to be comfortable with my CPAP setup to use the 42" fan...so in actual use I don't know how either compare.

Assembly was its usual snap, noticed the base is a bit more weighted. Which I guess is necessary due to the pole and increased concentration of mass at the top. The remote looks very much like the Lasko 42", except instead of an ION button, it has a moon (sleep button). Most of the codes are the same, but the sleep button doesn't seem to do anything to the Lasko 42" while the ION button toggles the sleep light, but doesn't actually seem to do anything, on the 52".

The remotes don't affect the Lasko 3540 Floor Fan, which is good since that's the main fan helping to make things comfortable in my bedroom.

Some quirks...well, there's the usual Lasko makes lots of beeping. But, what threw me at first was this fan didn't include batteries for the remote. Also interesting is that 'sleep' mode, sets the timer to 6 hours. And, it can't be changed. The fan also seems to be in a lower mode than low. I would've preferred the whole 7.5 hour maximum countdown if it was going to force a timer setting. Since when I do use timer, that's usually what I set....

So, the Lasko 42" has moved into my livingroom. It is currently up front, hopefully the TiVo remote conflict with Honeywell fan is just a quirk of the Honeywell and things will work. ... even though they both fans uses a subset of the same codes. I'm leaving the Honeywell at the back of the room, mainly because I haven't yet decided where I'm going to move it. I guess if the conflict problem comes true...the Lasko will move to the back...and I'll have to find a new home for the Honeywell sooner than I intend to.

I kind of have an idea of where it could go, but I need to rearrange/dispose of some clutter.

UPS, Westar Energy, DPP-600HD and CPAP

Well, here I am sitting in the dark....had to make some reconfigurations of stuff so I can still be online for the moment....

But, this is like the 3 significant outage in the last couple of weeks. Didn't I get a letter earlier this year saying that there had been like 4 in the previous year, and that they were going to be working on improving reliability of the system? Forgot to talk to my doctor about what to do when the power is out, and I want to keep breathing while I'm sleeping....

Earlier I blogged on how I had pulled the trigger on buying a DPP-600HD to maybe have DC power backup for such things. Only problem was that UPS was supposed to deliver it today. Scheduled Delivery July 3rd. It last showed as out for delivery at 4:45am. Obviously they didn't show up at all, even though I canceled my plans for today to stay home and wait for it.

Not sure what has me more annoyed. Since my electric bill goes up every month, even though I'm on average pay plan....and I'm sure running CPAP and the associated others (like needing more AC because it gets warm and wet under the mask otherwise). isn't helping my costs.

Can't say that I'm using more power than I did when I lived in Ohio....and at first my bills seem to match what I used to pay back there. But now its like 60% more.... wonder what I'm getting for it.

Though still, I think I'm more annoyed at UPS still. Though as this power outage stretches on....that's changing.

Finally got my front door rekeyed

I've been thinking of doing this ever since I bought the condo that I had been leasing. Worried about what keys are out there.

Plus there have been two occasions where I've come home to find my front door unlocked.

First time I was still leasing, I had gone away to Calgary on Xmas holidays for a week and came home to find the door unlocked.

Second time was after I owned it, I yelled at the building owner about it and since then whenever they say they'll be around doing maintenance inside all the units...I take time off from work to make sure that my unit stays secure.

Evidently the reason is because the landlord doesn't believe in deadbolts, and won't lock them after someone has been in (even though I'm pretty sure the insurance company's discount for having deadbolts, assumes you use them.) And, like my door...units don't have doors that close properly (year round). Though my neighbor has it worse...if they don't close their door completely, it'll swing wide open on its own. And, there have been too many occasions where I've come home to see their door wide open and there's nobody home. Probably doesn't do much for the heating costs....

So, I had been looking at finding details on line about doing the rekey myself. Though not in any major hurry....plus nothing, except maybe buying completely new locksets, via Amazon.com.

Well, the new yellow pages came out a couple weeks ago...and I happened to flip it open to look at locksmiths. And, that got the gears turning again.

And, now with the upcoming trip to Penguicon...the combination of anxiety and paranoia (partly induced by my CPAP & sleep issues)....I went and called the first big locksmith add in the yellow pages and had Bandit Locksmith come out and rekey my front door.

Lasko 3540 Cyclone 20-Inch Pivoting Floor Fan with Remote Control

On the weekend, I started finding it uncomfortably warm at night....particularly in the area under the headgear of my CPAP mask. I was resorting to turning the thermostat down.

It isn't that warm and humid yet....could get really expensive if I'm going to need to do this all summer. Temporarily I have inverted the sleep time temperature range on my set-back thermostat. Normally, its not as cool when I'm sleeping. Now its cooler than any other time.

While I was laying there waiting for the A/C to have its effect, the air purifier kicked itself to high and it made a slight improvement in comfort. Years ago when I lived in Medicine Hat, and didn't have air conditioning...I had floor fans (TurboAire) that I pointed at the ceiling to circulate air and make things tolerable. I had given them away a few moves ago....

But, I thought that maybe I should get something like it ASAP. I had been looking previously, but it wasn't a rush then...so I had put it off, because I wanted to find the same brand as I used to have....but it wasn't coming up in my internet searches (partly because I couldn't remember the brand name).....and because I was looking for a fan, rather than an 'air circulator'

However, now that I was in a hurry to get one....I looked to Amazon Prime to have it come my way on a particular day when I was going to be home for other reasons.

It was hard trying to find out if the fan would tilt to the full blow into ceiling orientation (a video review of the Lasko 3540 didn't show it tilting more than a few clicks up) But, after narrowing down the choices that were sold by Amazon.com and in stock, so that I would get it today. I settled on this one.

Part of the reason was the remote control and another part was that it seemed to have only a two-prong plug. And, I crossed my fingers that it would go to the straight up orientation.

Ecotones - Ambient Adaptive Sound Therapy System

Link: http://www.hammacher.com/publish/76034.asp

A little while ago, on one of the gadget blogs I follow, I heard about this product. It then appeared on a few others. I saw a listing for it on Amazon.com, but it wasn't actually available....so I put it on my wish list as something I would get in the future.

This is something I have toyed with getting for my bedroom...to help combat the noises that my neighbors make...though some of the noises they make are just rude, and being a bad neighbor, and I thought this was a no pets property....

And, from the description this sounded like it fit the bill. Later I saw that Hammacher Schlemmer was carrying it. So, I made a note to buy it...so that it would arrive shortly after my return from winter vacation.

It wasn't ordered in time to get it before Christmas...and the UPS tracking said it would arrive on December 30th. But, apparently while I was out getting the CPAP on December 29th...UPS showed up to try and deliver it. So, I waited at home to receive it on the 30th, as originally planned.

Now that I had it...I quickly discovered two (and then a third) problem with it. First, when you plug it in...it goes through a calibration process and emits a very loud tone. And, it does this every time it gets power. Meaning, hope the power never blinks in the middle of the night, or you'll get a rude awakening.

Kind of a problem since I got it to help deal with noise when trying to get to sleep...and stay asleep. But, now I have it on the PowerSource 400 I recently acquired.

Second was that the 12 choices of SoundStories...were the only sound options for it. There's no plain white noise or the like. I figured "Relaxing Fan" would be the one to go with. I have sometimes cranked my aircleaner to full blast to help mask condo noises. But, that level of noise is kind of bothersome....as well...and I prefer to leave it in automatic mode, and not have to remember switching it in and out, etc. Though the ecotones unit is more expensive than the aircleaner....

Later I discovered a 3rd problem...the "Relaxing Fan" SoundStory contains a chime element. Which I found disturbing...and eventually set out to find a different SoundStory.

Other, SoundStories are already not to my liking or contain other distracting elements...like birds chirping or cars honking, sirens.

Currently, I've settled on "Distant Thunderstorm" as my SoundStory. I didn't really want a water based theme, since normally I find the sound of water very worisome and distracting. Too many occasions, where I've heard the sound of water...and something bad is causing the sound. Now I hear something like the sound of water, and spend time wandering my condo checking if there's something wrong.

Plus a real Thunderstorm would usually wake me up at night.....
